CISTM17 - Extreme Travel
Travel to challenging environments has become a popular recreational pursuit across age groups. Poorly prepared adventure travellers are at risk of dangerous outcomes. Travel medicine practitioners may not have personal experience of extreme travel, but may be consulted by prospective extreme travellers. This workshop will address the health risks of extreme adventure travel and provide practical advice which may be of value in the travel clinic.
Objectives:
• Provide pre-travel health advice to travellers going to “extreme” environments with consideration for pre-existing conditions.
• Provide pre-travel health advice to extreme travellers in relation to survival in both jungle and arctic environments.
• Discuss the recognition and emergency management of high-altitude illness, including controversies surrounding use of acetazolamide.
